Summer in Uttarakhand means two seasons in one. Before the monsoon, in May and June, the high meadows and passes open up. After it, in September and October, the air clears and the peaks come back.

These five treks cover most of what people hope for: flowers, a pilgrim shrine, a mystery lake, a valley of old villages and a glacier. Altitudes below are approximate because sources differ.

Five summer treks

  • Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. A national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Garhwal Himalaya. The valley floor sits at roughly 3,400 to 3,650 m, and the flowers peak in July and August. Hemkund Sahib, a Sikh pilgrimage lake at about 4,329 m, is a steep add-on from Ghangaria. Usually 6 days or more.
  • Roopkund. A glacial lake at roughly 4,800 m, known for human skeletons visible around it. Lohajung is the usual base, and the trek takes about 8 days. Best in May and June or September and October.
  • Har Ki Dun. A U-shaped valley near Sankri, often called the Valley of Gods, at about 3,500 m. It is a trek through old villages and wooden temples. Usually 6 to 7 days; April to June and September to November are good.
  • Pindari Glacier. A Kumaon trek from Loharkhet or Song up the Pindar river to the snout of the glacier. Usually 6 to 8 days. A good pick for those who want a glacier without technical climbing.
  • Dodital and Darwa Top. A lake trek from Uttarkashi with forest, a quiet lake and a pass. Often 5 to 6 days. Locals say the lake is the birthplace of Ganesh.

Monsoon or not?

The monsoon changes the plan. Rain, mist and landslides can close roads in Garhwal in July and August. Valley of Flowers is the one trek that suits the monsoon because the flowers depend on it, but you should expect cloud and keep spare days. For most other treks, aim for May to mid-June or September to October.

What to watch for

  • Roads and landslides. Mountain roads in Uttarakhand can close for hours or days after rain. Build a buffer day into your plan.
  • Altitude. Roopkund and Hemkund go above 4,000 m. Read the AMS guide before you go.
  • Leave no trace. Valley of Flowers and Roopkund are fragile. Stay on trail, carry out your waste and do not pick flowers.
  • Permits and entry fees. National park and forest rules change. Confirm the current rules and fees before you travel.

Picking your trek

  • First summer trek: Valley of Flowers, with a day at Hemkund if you are fit.
  • Mystery and altitude: Roopkund, if you have trekked before.
  • Culture and villages: Har Ki Dun.
  • Glacier views: Pindari.
Verify before you travelRoad openings, permit rules, fees, timings and weather change quickly in the mountains. Use this guide for planning, not as a live bulletin, and confirm the current situation with the Skypath desk before you leave.
