Overview

One of the most popular crossover treks in India. You climb out of the pine forests of the Kullu valley, camp beside glacial streams, cross the Hampta Pass and drop into the barren, wind-carved valley of Lahaul. A drive to Chandratal lake finishes the trip.

  • A dramatic change of landscape from green Kullu to dry Lahaul
  • The Hampta Pass crossing at 14,100 ft
  • Stream crossings and a camp at Shea Goru
  • A drive to Chandratal, the moon-shaped lake
  • Clear night skies from remote camps

Good to Know

  • Pass day is long (about 8 hours) with a steep, loose descent. Good fitness helps.
  • Stream crossings are cold and fast in the afternoon. Your guides will lead them.
  • Camps are above 11,000 ft, so nights are cold even in summer.

What to Carry

  • Waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support
  • Backpack (50 to 60 L) with rain cover
  • Down jacket, fleece and thermal layers
  • Gaiters, sunglasses and a cap
  • Trekking poles
