Top 5 Short Treks in Himachal Pradesh for a Weekend in the Mountains

Length 1 to 3 days
Altitude range 2,700 to 3,700 m
Good for First-timers
Season Most of the year

You do not need a week to feel the Himalaya. Himachal has treks that start in the morning, end in a meadow or a lake, and leave you back in town by Sunday.

These five are short, well known and different from each other. Distances and times vary between sources and with the route you take, so use the numbers as a guide.

The five treks

1. Triund, near McLeod Ganj

A ridge at roughly 2,850 m above Dharamshala with a clear view of the Dhauladhar range. Many people do it in a day or camp one night. The trail is steady and busy, so start early for quiet and good light.

2. Prashar Lake, near Mandi

A round lake at about 2,730 m with a floating island and a wooden temple on its edge. The walk is around 7 km one way from the road, usually done in 1 to 2 days. Good in spring and autumn.

3. Kheerganga, Parvati Valley

About 12 km one way from Barshaini to a high meadow at roughly 2,960 m, with a hot spring at the top. Usually 2 to 3 days with a camp. It is popular, so expect company on weekends.

4. Beas Kund, near Manali

A glacial lake at about 3,700 m under Hanuman Tibba and the Pir Panjal. It works as a 2-day trek with a night in camp, and it is one of the best short treks from Manali. See Skypath's Beas Kund trek.

5. Serolsar Lake, near Jalori Pass

A short forest walk of about 5 km from Jalori Pass to a quiet lake near Tirthan and Jibhi. It is one of the easiest of the five and a good pairing with a stay in the Banjar valley.

Which one to pick

  • Easy and scenic: Prashar Lake or Serolsar Lake.
  • A classic ridge: Triund.
  • A night under stars with a hot spring: Kheerganga.
  • The most dramatic: Beas Kund, which gives you a snow-fed lake and big peaks in two days.

Things short treks teach you

Short does not mean simple. Weather changes fast above 2,500 m, trails get slippery after rain, and the evenings are cold even in summer. Carry a rain layer, a warm jacket and water, and start early. If you are new, read the trekking packing list first.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the safest windows for most of these. Triund and Kheerganga are possible in winter but can be snowy and cold. Beas Kund is best from May to October. Check conditions before you go because snow and rain change plans quickly.

Verify before you travelRoad openings, permit rules, fees, timings and weather change quickly in the mountains. Use this guide for planning, not as a live bulletin, and confirm the current situation with the Skypath desk before you leave.
